“At the dawn of the millennium, the nation collapsed. At fifteen percent unemployment, ten million were out of work. 800,000 students boycotted school. The adults lost confidence and, fearing the youth, eventually passed the Millennium Educational Reform Act, AKA the BR Act…”
More after the jump…
Ah, Battle Royale. One of my all time favorite films, i’m not exaggerating either. I easily put it in my top 5 of all time that i have seen. For the purpose of this post i am strickly going by the film. I have read some of the manga years ago but never gotten a chance to read the novel. So the film will be my medium. This is not going to be a review or a summation, rather i will explain the basic plot and tell you why i think you should watch this movie.
In the not too distant future Kids have stopped going to school, and are becoming a drain on society. To combat this the government passes the Millennium Educational Reform Act, or “BATTLE ROYALE ACT.”
In the Battle Royale once a year a class of 9th graders a year is chosen via a lottery. This class i chosen and abuducted while in route for a class trip and are taken to the isalnd.
They wake up in a dark class room with a metal collar loaded with explosives around their necks and are greeted by there old teacher who explains the rules of Battle Royale to them.
The students then get a ruck sack containing: food, water, a map, and a random weapon. This weapon can be anything from Hand grenades, AK47 (or 74 cant really tell) Shotgun, Uzi, Tazer, Kama, a frying pan or anything in between.
They are then sent out on the island and ordered to kill each other until one remains or the time is up. At which time is more than 1 student is alive the explosive collars will detonate killing them all. Given no time to react or prepare some students cave under the preasue and commit suicide en mass, others try and play the game leading to some odd deaths.
All in all this is not a movie for everyone. Suicides, mass killings over misplaced poison, attempted rape, a psychopathic teacher obsessed with a female student, a twisted love story and dozens of children violently killed are just a few things this movie has to offer. But my description cannot do Battle Royale justice by a long shot. One of my favorite directors, Quentin Tarantino has said “If there’s any movie that’s been made since I’ve been making movies that I wish I had made, it’s that one.” and even named it as his favorite movie of all time. If you wont take my word for it surely you can take his.
The atmosphere is great and the score composed by Masamichi Amano and performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra is truly one of the best scores to a movie i have heard. Like i said i cannot really do this film justice by describing to you the events that transpire. Its something one use see for them selves to really get. At first glance i is little more than a violent shoot em up film but once you delve in and start to really look at it, examine the motives of each character and try to wrap you head around things you can really appreciate it.
I have probably rambled on long enough so i will leave you to ponder my words and hopfully go check out this brilliant movie.
