This weeks selection: “Two Nun’s And A Pack Mule” by Rapeman
More after the jump…
Rapeman was Steve Albini’s next project after he and the rest of Big Black decided to call it quits just before there last album Songs About Fucking dropped and they were at there peak. And “Two Nuns And A Pack Mule” was the only album they put out alongside a couple of EP’s. Albini got the name Rapeman from a manga by the same name that he found and became obsessed with. And so they were met with accusation of Albini and the band being misogynistic and hateful towards women but it was all just bullshit over nothing, imo.
The music is just what you would expect from the genuineness behind Big Black, as Steve Albini took the sound he finely crafted and further honed it in Rapeman. The guitar sounds like a pavement saw going though sheet metal, the bass is pounding like a steel cable being rhythmically beat with a tire iron the drumming is crisp and on point, and its just , its noise for the fuck of it with a bit of wit and guile. Bottom line though if you are not into Noise music you probably wont like this album, or if you are easily offended. I on the other hand subscribe to the ethos of Mr. Albini ” I like noise. I like big-ass vicious noise that makes my head spin. I wanna feel it whipping through me like a fucking jolt.”
Far as stand out songs go, my picks are
Steak And Black Onions
Just Got Paid (cover of a ZZ Top song)
