At CES Razer unveild its newest product. Is it a state of the art mouse, or amazing keyboard? In a word, No.Introducing Project Fona. Taken from Razers info site because frankly they can explain this thing much better than I.
“It’s a tablet. It’s a pc.
Project Fiona Concept Tablet runs a PC environment on a powerful next generation Intel processor ready to play all of your favorite PC games. This tablet concept is running advanced applications on an ultra portable form factor, bringing hardcore PC gaming on the go.”
More after the jump.
If you a avid gamer as i am then you know gaming on the go offers its own set of challenges. A portal platform needs to be relativity light weight, easy to carry around, have a good user interface (in my book the single most important aspect and one reason i cant stand most games on smartphones, more on that later) and offer a good variety of game to pick from. Now i cant speak for the last one but lets give the other points a shot. The concept of a portable machine on which one can play PC titles is great, but that’s what i have my laptop for. One of the things i see touted time and time again when discussing the merits of Console VS PC gaming is the precision afforded by using a mouse and keyboard that is absent from a console, with controllers.
In reading the site Razer describes this machine as a platform for Hardcore PC Gaming On The Go. “Project Fiona redefines how you control your tablet.” Indeed it does, by taking one and sticking a Wiimote on either side.
“Adapted from a full featured PC gamepad, Project Fiona’s integrated dual controllers coupled with its advanced multi-touch screen are designed to make complex game navigation ergonomic and intuitive without compromising on the portability of the tablet.” without compromising on the portability my ass. As i am writing i try and think just how would i carry this around with me. Based on the size spec from Razer of a 10.1″ 1280×800 display not accounting for the controls i would need to dedicate a pouch in my backpack at least to fit it. There is no way it will fit in ones pocket or normal sized purse.
“This first-of-its-kind PC gaming tablet with integrated dual controllers is definitely not for playing casual games about unhappy birds or zombie-killing flora.” Well i sure as hell don’t think i’m going to be able to play WOW, Starcraft 2, COD, or SWTOR on it. I will aplaud them for trying something different but, im seeing this as more of a Virtual Boy than Game Boy.
Now, dont get the wrong idea. I love Razer, my mouse is a Death Adder if i ever have the spare cash they have a few keyboards i want. Making mice, keyboards and headsets is what they excel at and honestly i wish they would just stay on that path. There is no market i can think of for this product. The hardcore gamer’s i know all-ready have Laptops, iPad and other tablets, PSP’s and DS’s on top of smartphone’s for gaming on the go. Fiona is a nice effort but i feel it is more of a cash grab than a sincere entree by Razer as a gaming platform.
